Five-chamber profile with PVC windows
In the last 2 to 3 years, the 5-chamber profile is considered a standard for PVC windows. 3-chamber profiles are only used very rarely (e.g. in basement windows). 5-chamber profiles have steel reinforcement in both the frame and the sash and thus ensure optimal structural requirements.

Fixation of the window When fixing a window in a building, both the frame materials and the conditions for the installation must be considered and the attachment takes place vertically to the window level by fastening elements. In general, frame anchors, wall anchors and/or window angles are used for this. With PVC the distance for mounting is 700 mm, with wooden or aluminium it is at 800 mm and takes place at each of 150 mm from the inner corner. It is important to ensure that each side must be anchored at two points. A proper transmission of forces into the building must also be ensured. Subsequent deformation, which could impair the function of the window are to be avoided under all circumstances.

Fixed glazing A window glazing refers to the direct use of glazing in the window frame without the sash. Window glazings are usually used in stairwell windows, facades, flower windows and in conservatories.

Flexural strength of float glass When bending a glazing, one side produces a compression and the other side a stretch. Depending on the glass thickness, edge shape, and type of product the transverse rupture strength of a float glass can be 40 MPa (N/mm2) and a prestressed glass (ESG = single-pane safety glass) 120 to 200 MPa (N/mm2).

Float glass Since glass is an inorganic melting product, the solidification normally happens without crystallization. Ever since the modern production method for float glass the previously used method for the production of flat glass could be discarded. The word float is synonymous with "swim or float on top". An endless glass sheet from the melting end moves on the liquid tin bath. There it floats on the surface of the molten metal and spreads. It is necessary to keep it at the set temperature for a sufficient time duration. Once the glass is cooled to room temperature (e.g. in the cooling channel), it can be cut into boards. Float glass has its major use in the most common types of insulating glass and single glazing types.

Fold The fold designates the profiling of the superposed window frame and window sash and the glazing fold is used to assemble the glass pane.

Folding shutter Folding shutters are often made of wood and used as blinds and dim-out. They are assembled on the wall beside the windows. Before the development of roller shutters they were used for darkening bedrooms. Nowadays they are hardly used and usually occur as a building design.

Fracture behavior of glass The breakage of float glass (chilled normal) results in numerous sharp-edged, partially pointed and large fragments. With single-pane safety glass (thermally toughened) the risk of breakage is low compared to float glass. When damaging the edges or the surface and thereby the result is an imbalance of the stress ratio, the glass breaks into a network of more or less loosely connected crumbs. It is possible that the break occurs immediately or after some time. With laminated safety glass the risk of breakage is also low compared to float glass. The fracture pattern of the laminated single panes corresponds to the original product. The risk of a cut or stitch wound is decimated by the fact that glass fragments are held together by the intermediate layer and thereby the opening limit is restricted. The fracture pattern of laminated glass corresponds to the single-glass base products of the composite. Information to the fracture behavior can also be taken from DIN EN 12600 standard and the GUV-8027 SI standard of accident insurance carrier.

Frame A frame may consist of metal, wood or concrete and is assembled in the window opening during the shell construction phase. Subsequent to the cleaning work and shell construction work it serves to hold in the window.

Front-mounted shutters Front-mounted shutters are mounted in front of the window and thus prevent thermal bridges, as would occur with poorly isolated roller shutters over the window. Roller shutters can also be easily maintained and adjusted from the outside.
